A BIT OF HISTORY

First human traces in the area of Positano dates back to the 11,000 BC and can be established thanks to some findings in the caves surrounding the city. The name of Positano is probably of Greek origin and recalls the god of the sea Poseidon.

Positano was a flourishing town under the Roman domination, since Tiberius, living in Capri, used the city to have a supply of wheat he was sure was not being poisoned (the mill was working until a few years ago, in Piazza dei Mulini). With the fall of Rome, Positano entered a period of crisis (as more or less the whole of Europe) and ended up in the hands of the Ostrogoths first and the Byzantines then.

The Amalfi Republic took possession of the city between the 9th and 11th century and Positano became a rich and renowned commercial town, capable of contending the leading role to Venice.

The golden age of the city under the Spanish rule lasted almost without interruption until the 16th century, when the recurring plague epidemics left their mark on Positano. What’s more, the attacks of Barbary pirates stroke the city multiple times and it was heavily ransacked. In the second half of the century, by order of the viceroy Pedro de Toledo, a series of maritime fortifications were built trying to stop the corsairs’ raid (the most famous towers are the ones in Sponda, Trasita and Fornillo). The system was ultimately useless and the Turkish ships led by Suleiman II burned down the whole city.

In 1668 Positano redeemed its freedom (at the price of 12,943 ducats) and gained the title of città regia (royal city) under the direct control of the king of Spain. Trades started again and new routes were opened towards Cyprus, Greece, Puglia and Calabria. Many of the most beautiful buildings of the city dates back to the 17th century.

The commercial decline of the city came with the 19th century and the affirmation of steam powered machineries. Positano couldn’t adapt to the change and the small port couldn’t allow the construction of bigger ships, preventing the city from competing in commerce. Many took their goods and left Italy in search of a better life in America and the city slowly decayed.

The current fortune is linked to the numerous writers and artists (mainly Russians and Germans) who chose Positano as their residence, appreciating its beauty and climate. As of today, Positano is one of the most sought towns of the Amalfi Coast and Italy in general.
