A BIT OF HISTORY

The wine vocation of Montalcino was its prime prize and was already known is the Middle Ages and in 1744 Charles Thompson stated: “Montalcino is not particularly famous, except for the goodness of its wines”. Until the second half of the 19th century, the production in the area revolved around a white wine (Moscadello di Montalcino) and it was only in 1852 that the pharmacist Clemente Santi presented two bottles of pure red wine 1852. After Santi’s success, other producers in the area focused on producing red wine and in 1855 the Brunello di Montalcino was already listed among the specialties of the Siena region. Further impulse to the production came from Ferruccio Biondi-Santi (Clemente’s grandson) which worked hard to improve on his grandfather’s legacy. Recognizing his efforts, in 1932, the Ministry of Agriculture appointed Ferruccio as the creator of the Brunello. In the first half of the 20th century, scarred by two world wars, the production of Brunello declined hitting a bottom which could have marked the end of the wine. In 1950 an almost miraculous reprise in the production allowed the Brunello to become one of the most appreciated wines in Italy and all over the world.
