HISTORY OF THE FORTRESS

Panicale is located between the rivers Nestore and Chianti and already in the Etruscan age the town had an important defensive role in the context f the lucumony of Chiusi and Romans built a castrum here to protect the Via Cassia.

The Longobards included the town in the Duchy of Spoleto, until the arrival of Franks from northern Italy marked the end of the Langobardic reign and the beginning of Frank hegemony over Italy with the foundation of the Marquisate of Tuscany.

The castle is first mentioned in a document from 917 AD, when Berengar I gifted the towns of Panicale and Paciano to the count Uguccione II.

The 13th century saw the affirmation of Perugia in the central Italy and the new rulers ordered a new set of walls to be built in 1276, so to further increase the defensive capabilities of the fortress. The baptism of fire for these new walls came in 1312 when they resisted the siege by the troops of Henry II of Germany.

The last expansion of the walls dates back to the 1479 – 1480, when the round tower near the Porta Perugina was ultimately built.

In 1540 Perugia was captured by the Papal State and all of its possessions ended up in pope’s hand. The rule of the church went on uninterrupted until 1860 (exception made for the brief Napoleonic parenthesis) when Perugia was finally annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
