Ravenna

RAVENNA - SEAVIEW VILLAS AND WINERIES FOR SALE

The foundation of Ravenna is still today shrouded in mystery, but it can probably be traced back to the Etruscans or the Umbrians. The position of the city, accessible almost exclusively from the sea because of the marshes that surrounded it, did not go unnoticed by the Romans who made it an important military port. From 402 to 476 Ravenna was also the capital of the Western Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages the city was the capital of the Exarchate of Italy under Byzantine control until 751, when Ravenna fell into Longobard hands. After the arrival of the Franks, the city adopted a municipal system that resisted until 1441, when Venice conquered Ravenna. From 1509 the State of the Church controlled the city that finally, in 1859, decided to join the Kingdom of Sardinia and, in 1861, the Kingdom of Italy.

The Ostrogoth and Byzantine past has left incredible traces in Ravenna, such as the Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Neoniano Baptistery and the Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe. Also in Ravenna, one can see the tomb of the great poet Dante Alighieri, who died in the city in 1321.
